On August 11, the Fauntleroy Community Association hosted a public forum on bicycling safety at The Hall at Fauntleroy. President Frank Immel and Vice President Catherine Bailey moderated. The meeting came two months after bicyclist Maridee Bonadea was killed on SW Wildwood Place, a short distance uphill from the Fauntleroy ferry dock.

Her daughter, Lani, and her widow, Laura, spoke first. Both said safer streets should not wait for the next death, and should not depend on who was killed. Laura’s words gave the evening its theme: everyone deserves to live. Friends from Rainbow Riders and other neighbors asked officials to act on known hazards elsewhere too, not only on this one block.

The panel included SDOT Director Angela Brady, SDOT safety officer Venu Nemani, representatives of Washington State Ferries and Metro, Alex Hudson from Mayor Wilson’s office, and City Councilmember Rob Saka.

SDOT described work it is designing for the crash site: removing parking on the south side of that block of SW Wildwood Place, an all-way stop at Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Wildwood Place, and a bike lane. Nemani said the parking removal would be done within a few weeks. The next day, temporary no-parking signs were posted from Fauntleroy Way to 36th Ave SW.

Neighbors also asked the city to revisit recommendations that were never built, including a 2020 report that called for removing the Wildwood parking, and to keep the community informed as designs and timelines firm up. SDOT said it would. Washington State Ferries noted that a traffic signal is planned later this year where the ferry dock meets Fauntleroy Way. Councilmember Saka said he is drafting traffic-safety legislation that would look more broadly at intersection daylighting, side guards on trucks, and Vision Zero reviews.

West Seattle Blog recorded the forum and published a full account.

Since then, the city has moved ahead on Wildwood. See our updates on the protected bike lane and the ferry-dock traffic signal.
