Update: Protected Bike Lane Coming to SW Wildwood Place

The City of Seattle is moving ahead with a protected bicycle lane on SW Wildwood Place near the Fauntleroy ferry dock. West Seattle Blog reported on September 24 that SDOT will pave this weekend to prepare the street for bike-lane installation.

Why this project

In June 2026, bicyclist Maridee Bonadea was killed while riding on SW Wildwood Place. Neighbors and advocates pressed for quicker safety fixes. SDOT has already removed parking and added interim paint and posts along the corridor between the ferry terminal area and 46th Ave SW. In August, Mayor Katie Wilson signed an executive order directing completion of a protected bike lane on Wildwood by the end of 2026.

What’s happening this weekend

Per SDOT (via West Seattle Blog), crews need a smoother riding surface before the bike lanes go in:

• Pavement repairs / asphalt patches on Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Wildwood Pl
• Saturday, September 26, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (may be rescheduled if rain is forecast)
• Temporary closures of parts of the street during the work
• Temporary closure of the eastbound bus stop at SW Wildwood and 46th Ave SW while the asphalt cools and hardens

SDOT says it will return later to seal cracks with a flexible sealant.

What the bike lane may look like

SDOT is still choosing between two layouts (described on the project page and fact sheet):

1. Uphill / southbound protected lane only, with bikes and cars sharing the downhill / northbound travel lane toward the ferry
2. Protected bike lanes in both directions

Also planned before year-end: relocating load zones at 45th Ave SW & SW Wildwood Pl, and relocating passenger drop-off locations south of the ferry terminal. An all-way stop at Fauntleroy and Wildwood remains under evaluation.
