Morey's
Bench
A combination book signing and 90th birthday
reception hosted by FCA on August 6 for community elder Morey Skaret drew
nearly 100 people to the courtyard at the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse. While
munching on desserts catered by Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes, guests caught up
with friends and neighbors and purchased a total of 70 autographed copies
of Morey's Bench: Stories from the Life & Times of Morest L. Skaret.
FCA President Bruce Butterfield emceed a brief program of tribute,
including a pr oclamation from Mayor Greg Nickels recognizing Morey's
service to the city and community.
An outgrowth of a popular column that ran
for several years in FCA's Neighbors newsletter, the illustrated
collection of 43 life stories takes readers along on nine decades of
living - o from Morey's birth in 1913 on a prairie homestead in Alberta,
Canada, and coming of age during the Great Depression in Seattle o through
his service in the Civilian Conservation Corps and dual careers in the
Coast Guard and law enforcement o to his pioneering of Alzheimer's support
and being the guy just about everybody in the neighborhood knows. The
130-page softcover book is available locally at The Original Bakery or at
Square Square 1 Books in Jefferson Square and the Log House Museum at Alki.
Price is $15.
Parking a Problem
Near Your Home?
Fauntleroy has an RPZ; Zone 3. If it
doesn't cover your area or to get additional permits read the following
from the Seattle Transportation website:
Seattle's Residential Parking Zone (RPZ)
Program has been developed to help ease parking congestion in residential
neighborhoods.
An RPZ may be appropriate where the parking
congestion is caused by being near a business district with limited
parking and/or caused by parking generated by a hospital, school, factory
(or ferry). An RPZ is established in a neighborhood to discourage
long-term parking by non-residents on residential streets.
Basic qualifications are: *75 percent or
more of the parking spaces are being used. *There is an identifiable
"parking generator" affecting the neighborhood. *The parking
problem exists on at least five contiguous blocks. *At least 60 percent of
residents in the area approve of the RPZ.
