FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING - FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2003 - 7 P.M.
BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: David Allen, Bruce Butterfield, Martha Callard,
Gary Dawson, Vlad Oustimovitch, Dot Rohan, Chuck Sawyer, Vicki
Schmitz-Block and Lynn Sealey.
F.C.A. CONSULTANT PRESENT: Lynn Olson.
F.C.A. MEMBERS PRESENT: Kim Petram and Kathleen Dell Plain.
GUEST PRESENT: Larry Carpenter (Alki Community Association).
1. MINUTES: The minutes for November's meeting were approved and can be
posted on the website.
2. TRAFFIC: Kim Petram reported on the progress for the cross-walk that
is desired by members of our community. The location is at the entrance to
the north playfield at Lincoln Park. Kim has spoken about the possibility
with Megan Hoyt, who is Seattle's Department of Transportation Pedestrian
Program Coordinator. In 2001, a DOT traffic study was done and the
conclusion then was that the pedestrian volume even on a soccer day would
not warrant a cross-walk. However, Megan indicated to Kim that we should
continue our efforts and prioritize the requests we have. There was some
discussion regarding cross-walk safety in general. Phil Sweetland and Kim
will coordinate a date for the next traffic meeting, hopefully to be
scheduled before the proposed January 20th FCA General Meeting.
3. LEGAL MATTER: David Allen explained that a Vashon resident is
attempting to collect a huge sum of money ($30 million) because King
County did not respond in a timely manner to his requests for information
regarding the construction of the two stadiums. David wants to file an
Amicus Curiae (a friend of the court) brief before the State Supreme Court
to argue that while the right and need for full and open public disclosure
needs to be supported, the county should not be bankrupted in the process.
Those moneys are greatly needed for parks, schools, libraries, etc. David
will represent citizens on a pro bono basis and he came to garner F.C.A.
support. There would be no liability for our community group, and David
will write an indemnification clause in the brief. Vlad asked David to
attend the next Southwest District Council meeting on January 7th. Vicki
made a motion to support David and that motion was seconded by Dot and
carried by the remaining Board members.
4. JANUARY MEETING: The Church is booked for January 20th, and Lynn S.
mailed the letters to the three invited new City council members this
morning. Bruce will call them at the end of this week to make sure they
can come. Irene Stewart, new member on the School Board, is also slated to
come speak about the February School Levy. It was suggested that we invite
other community groups like MoCA and Alki to this meeting. If two or more
City Council members cannot come, it was decided to cancel this meeting.
For the May meeting, when elections are held, Bruce said he'd like to have
food tables again, as that was successful this year.
5. LINDA COX GATHERING: The date and time: Monday, December 15th at
6:30 p.m.
6. WELCOME BAGS: Martha talked with Mary Ashby, who would like to turn
over the "Welcome Bag" effort to a new individual. The materials
take up a file-box and a half. What is needed is a person who can store
the items and be responsive with a bag delivery to a new neighbor within a
week or so of notification. Martha thought it would be a good idea to
include a stamped post card inside the bag with a box to check if the
individual wants to be on the newsletter mailing list for a while. Martha
will find someone to take on this task.
7. NEWSLETTER: Martha needs to know as soon as possible if the January
20th meeting will occur so that she can include it in the next newsletter,
which is slated to be 4 pages long. It will include a Fauntleroy Fall
Festival wrap-up. Martha added that the Fauntleroy Children's Center was
one of the FFF sponsors. Everyone was asked to call or e-mail Martha with
any other ideas for inclusion in the newsletter.
8. WEBSITE: Larry Carpenter offered a correction for the E-mail
addresses listed on the website. Those with Comcast need to be changed
from .com to .net.
9. E-MAIL OUTREACH: Lynn S. said there was nothing new to report.
10. SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Vlad said there was no December
meeting. He has reinstated the July meeting. The SWDC does not meet in
August. Vlad reported that the MoCA monorail station will be designed for
the location just north of the Fauntleroy intersection on California (at
the video store across from Aaron's Bike Shop). Bruce went to the last
monorail meeting at the stadium and he reported that it was very well
attended.
11. FERRY ISSUES: As of January 1st, 2004, Gary said there will be no
more food service on the ferries except for vending machines.
12. TREASURER'S REPORT: Vicki passed out copies of the report:
$8,822.29 is in the main account and $2,298.40 is in the Cove Park
account. She added that donations to the Fall Festival totaled $2,446.90
with $2,233.62 for expenses. Vicki said that our new membership form
listing a space for FFF contributions had brought in many dollars. It was
decided by the group to have future forms printed listing the contribution
option.
13. FAUNTLEROY YMCA: Bruce is looking for a couple of people who would
be willing to join the YMCA's "Chair's Round Table Committee."
This committee helps to raise money for the "2004 Partners with Youth
Campaign." This worthwhile effort sends disadvantaged kids to camp in
the summer. Those who are interested should call 206-937-3812 at the
"Y" and ask for Jenny, Michele, or Tish.
14. ANTI-CRIME: No update.
15. COMMUTING BY BUS: Chuck described an extreme congestion situation
in Pioneer Square. Because parking is allowed for about three blocks on
1st Ave., the buses going south get backed up for blocks. Vlad said he was
sure the SWDC would support Chuck's effort to improve this situation.
Chuck will draft a letter which will go to the Mayor and City Council
members about this issue.
The next F.C.A. Board meeting will be on Tuesday, January 13 at 7 pm.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Lynn
Sealey F.C.A. Secretary www.fauntleroy.net
