Meeting Minutes
FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT:
Gary Dawson, Bruce Butterfield, Lynn Sealey, Phil Sweetland,
Kim Suyama, and Kirk Hopkins, Dot Rohan, and Mardi Clements. F.C.A. MEMBERS PRESENT: Chuck Sawyer, Vlad
Oustimovich, and Linda Cox. F.C.A. STAFF MEMBER PRESENT: Lynn Olson. 1. MINUTES:
The minutes from October’s meeting were approved. 2. TREASURER’S REPORT: Kim reported income in the last month of $220.00, which included one new member and 14 renewals and a $35 gift. Expenses totaled $309.63. The ending balance as of today’s date is $7,709.18. 3. AIRCRAFT NOISE:
Last Wednesday. November 7th, at the Southwest
District Council meeting, Linda Cox presented her resolution regarding
aircraft noise. Cindi Barker,
Ron Burke and Vlad are on a committee to re-word it so that it is West
Seattle specific. Once the
rewrite has been done, Vlad will forward it to Lynn S., who will then send
it on to the F.C.A. members and Board for review.
Linda urged that the Board sign it, as the next step is taking it
to the City Council. See the www.rcaanews.org
website for up to date information. 4. CURB BULB AT TEXACO
STATION: At the last
Ferry Advisory Meeting on Vashon, Gary made a presentation about the fact
that there is no signage yet to direct traffic up Fauntleroy instead of
down 47th. The current issue
of the West Seattle Herald mentioned that SeaTran would put up signs next
spring. If there’s a
December F.A.C. Executive Council meeting, Gary will talk about the
urgency of directional signage before spring. 5. DOCK CONSTRUCTION IN
2002: Judy Pickens has
drafted a letter to Joel Colby, who is the Washington State Ferries’
Marine Project Engineer for Fauntleroy and Southworth terminal
improvements. The letter states that next October’s hydraulic work should
be rescheduled, so as not to interfere with the critical salmon spawning
run in Fauntleroy Creek. Phil
mentioned another problem of fishermen, who have been seen at the mouth of
the creek. 6. WEBSITE: Our
website, www.scn.org/neighbors/fauntleroy,
currently has some great photographs of the salmon run.
Kirk asked if the F.C.A. by-laws and minutes could be added, and
those present agreed to add these items.
Kirk is still looking into having our own FCA URL. 7. WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY
PARTNERSHIP: Kirk will go to the monthly meeting next Tuesday. 8. SEATTLE MONORAIL
PROJECT: Kirk passed out
copies of information from a recent E.T.C. (Elevated Transportation
Company) meeting he attended. There
was group discussion about where the monorail would go in W. Seattle and
the possibility of it terminating at the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock.
Gary mentioned that coordinating bus schedules with ferry arrivals
should be considered before going to the expense of monorail construction
in this area. The #54 bus
would be used more, Gary added, if the Vashon/Southworth ferry schedules
coincided better. Three
commuter buses come off Vashon, but there are no Kitsap County
buses on the ferry. Kirk will
have Chris Nack add a web link to E.T.C. 9. SEATTLE
SESQUICENTENNIAL: Bruce attended the festivities held at Alki today,
along with about 500 other people. The
schooner “Exact” is moored at Alki. 10. HIGH POINT RESIDENTIAL UNITS, LIBRARY, AND POLICE PRECINCT: Vlad reported he attended the first design review for Highpoint, and that it’s moving along but may be under funded. Unfortunately, both the new library and police precinct have been delayed. It was decided Vlad would write a letter to the City Council about this issue and the fact that it is urgent that these two projects get started. 11. COVE PARK KIOSK: Mardi
opened discussion about how the kiosk that Ware Lantz built could be
utilized. One idea was to
post Orca whale photos taken by Mark Sears.
Further discussion centered on producing a brochure/flier to
utilize the $550 that was received in connection with the Cove Park
project. It must be used for
educational purposes, and could identify Tom Jay’s art installations.
Lynn O. will coordinate the brochure contents with the Lantz’s, Ann
Curtz and Judy Pickens. Lynn
said that the $240 we received as a grant for putting on Nature Night
could be utilized with the other amount, but needs to be spent by the one
year April anniversary of Nature Night.
She added that money spent for the educational materials can
include postage costs. 12. DRUMMING CEREMONY:
Phil reported that 50 people were at the overlook for the
ceremony to “drum” home the salmon. This educational and environmental idea was that of Scott
Allen’s. 13. CROSS WALKS: Chuck will coordinate having a SeaTran representative come to the next Board meeting to discuss placement of more crosswalks on Fauntleroy Way. Mid-block cross walks are not done
anymore. Nevertheless, a good
spot for one would be at the entrance to the playfield, which is about a
block south of the new bulb at the Texaco station. 14. DEPARTMENT OF
NEIGHBORHOODS: Bruce related that the City might cut the Neighborhood
Matching Fund in the 2002 budget. A
vital source of money for neighborhood improvements, Bruce urged everyone
to e-mail City Council members to maintain the fund. 15. NEXT NEWSLETTER:
Phil passed around the “story board” for the next
newsletter. The copy deadline
set by Judy Pickens is Dec. 14th with a Dec. 28th
mailing date. 16. GENERAL MEETING:
The bi-laws indicate a General Meeting need be held once/year.
We are looking at March for the next one. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Lynn B. Sealey, F.C.A. Secretary
