FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING - FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2003 - 7 P.M.
BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bruce Butterfield, Martha Callard, Gary Dawson,
Vlad Oustimovitch, Chuck Sawyer, Lynn Sealey, Phil Sweetland and Martin
Westerman.
GUESTS: Dicki Crumm, Kathleen Dell Plain, Paul Fischburg, and Stan
Lock.
CONSULTANT: Lynn Olson.
1. MINUTES: The minutes from September's meeting were approved and can
now be posted on the website.
2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Bruce reported that $1350 is in the Fall
Festival Account.
3. FERRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Gary attended the South Sound Ferry
Advisory Committee meeting recently on Vashon Island. Discussion centered
on the new ferry schedule for the triangle route (Southworth, Vashon,
Fauntleroy). One goal is to focus on commuter needs with more on-time
vessels and the reduction of overtime costs. The current fall schedule is
being evaluated and the winter schedule will reflect changes. Another goal
is to try to alleviate congestion on Fauntleroy Way during afternoon
commuter hours. A ridership survey was to begin today. In general over the
entire system, ridership has decreased in the past 18 months. It may be
due to the economy and/or the increased fares. The next date for the
Executive Council meeting is November 6th, and the next public meeting in
Fauntleroy will probably be on February 2, 2004.
4. NEWSLETTER: Martha is actively working on the next F.C.A.
"Neighbors" newsletter and plans to get it to the printer by
November 2nd. She will have it edited as a WORD document before the
newsletter formatting takes place.
5. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS: No "stench" update.
6. ANTI-CRIME: Kirk not present for an update.
7. WEBSITE: The website reflects an attractive tableau about the
upcoming Fauntleroy Fall Festival.
8. SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Vlad, in addition to being president of
the SWDC, is also a delegate working on the critical issue of the Alaskan
Way Viaduct Seawall Replacement Project. Currently, there are five
solutions being studied, and it is paramount that each maintains the
current capacity. Alaskan Way serves large population areas. Many south
end drivers use the viaduct to by-pass downtown to get to the north part
of Seattle and vise versa.
9. FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL: Martin indicated that many activities have
been planned. However, help is needed from noon until the 3 p.m. start
time for setting up and from 7 to 9 p.m. for the tear down. Also people
are needed in half hour shifts from 3 to 7 p.m. to fill helium balloons.
Martin plans to provide food and drinks for the volunteers.
10. DATA BASE BOOKLET: Lynn Olson presented a booklet she created with
the F.C.A. members listed. Discussion ensued on the privacy issue and it
was decided that those on the Board could benefit from having a copy.
11. OUTREACH COMMUNICATIONS: Lynn Sealey will work with Chris Nack when
Chris returns from vacation regarding having e-mail communications go
through the FCA website.
12. DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (DNDA): Paul
Fischburg was the director and founder of this group seven years ago and
he came to inform us of its origin and many successes. The DNDA arose out
of the Neighborhood Plan and in just a few short years, it has evolved
into an organization with several committees and sub-committees. There is
a $23 million capital campaign to help fund projects such as a new
location for the West Seattle Food Bank, multiple uses for the 14 year
boarded-up historic Cooper School, and construction of Croft Place
Townhomes for low income families. Applications have been made to Paul
Allen and the Gates Foundation to help fund these projects. The Longfellow
Legacy Trail came out of the Delridge Master Plan. On November 7th at the
South Seattle Community College Jerry Brockey Center is a dinner to raise
money for background support of the DNDA. There is a no host bar and salsa
band with dance lessons. There is a capacity for 350 people and last year,
$30,000 was raised.
13. STAN LOCK: Stan said there are two upcoming "Candidates
Forums." One is this Thursday, October 16th at the Town Hall and the
other is on October 22nd. Lynn S. will e-mail a notice of the Oct. 22nd
event. Stan also lamented the gradual demise of the Neighborhood
Planning/matching fund component of the City of Seattle Department of
Neighborhoods, which has been 7% of the Department of Neighborhoods'
budget.
14. WINTER MEETING: Bruce thinks we have enough content to have a
general F.C.A. meeting in January.
15. COVE PARK: Gary reported that the fall cleanup last Saturday
brought out the "regulars," who diligently cleaned the sand off
the art work, did a lot of weeding, and who stained and sealed the canoe,
which had some scratches and gouges. Ware Lantz coordinated the latter
effort with Tom Jay, the canoe artist. Those who were there enjoyed
blueberry muffins on site, and later, at the Dawson home, clam chowder.
Ann Dawson will follow up with the SSCC Horticulture Division for
maintenance and care of the vegetation at the park.
16. TRAFFIC: Phil S. indicated that Phil Polizatto has begun collecting
signatures for re-routing traffic at the 45th/Brace Point/Wildwood
business triangle. Trevor Partap told him that the petition will require
signatures from 50% of the neighbors. As a trial, the SDOT will paint
diagnonal parking stripes to make Brace Point one way eastbound. On 47th,
a speed bump is a possibility, but won't happen until spring. Kim Petram
is working on the cross-walk up by the wading pool at Lincoln Park.
The next meeting is Tuesday, November 11th at 7 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Lynn B. Sealey F.C.A. Secretary
