Board Meeting Minutes

FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 14, 2004

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
The monthly board meeting was called to attendance at 7:00 p.m. at the Hall at Fauntleroy.  In attendance were President Bruce Butterfield, Vice-President Phil Sweetland, Kathleen Dellplain, Lynn Olson, Vicki Schmitz-Block, Kathy Johnson, Martha Callard, Martin Westerman, Chuck Sawyer and co-secretary Kim Petram.

REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES
The minutes for the board meeting of August 10, 2004 were approved without change.

FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL FUND RAISER
A discussion was held regarding the need to cancel the fundraiser for the Fall Festival.  Less than 10 tickets were sold for the event.  Feedback ranged from concern that the Board didn’t respond sufficiently in promoting the event, multiple similar functions were occurring the same weekend, and that many sent in donations without purchasing tickets.  It was suggested that the timing be re-evaluated and that most fund-raisers depend on establishing a track record and relying on repeat participants.

Bruce Butterfield led the discussion on how to account for money spent and how to refund money for purchased tickets.  An accounting for money spent showed that the band ONCE would need to be reimbursed approximately $400.  Bruce will speak with the band coordinator the week of the 13th regarding the exact amount and will coordinate with Vicki Schmitz-Block regarding writing and distributing a check.  Approximately $350 was spent on invitations.  The printing costs were provided for by the Port of Seattle.  David Haggerty of Tuxedo’s N’ Tennis Shoes reported that the FCA will not owe any reimbursement.  It was agreed that Lynn Olson would draft a letter to go out to all ticket purchasers explaining the cancellation and thanking them for the support. It will also include a request to consider donating to the FFF.  Lynn Olson will send this draft to Bruce Butterfield for approval, along with the envelopes and self-addressed return envelope. Bruce will sign the letters and enclose the checks.

Confirmation was done to ensure all participants had been notified of the cancellation.

TRAFFIC AND CROSSWALK UPDATE
Kim Petram reported on the meeting held with the city on August 16, 2004.  In attendance were Brian Kemper, Acting City Traffic Engineer, Joe Couples, S-DOT Engineer, Peter Lagerway, Manager of Pedestrian Safety, plus community members Kim Petram, Phil Sweetland, Bruce Butterfield, Brenda Barnes, Alice Larson, Sydney Miller, and Kathleen Dellplain.  The traffic and pedestrian safety issues surrounding Fauntleroy Way were discussed with the city representatives.  Brian Kemper reported that he would again have his staff re-look at the issues and come back to the FCA with a revised plan of action.  No timeline was established.

It was discussed with the board that future communications with the city be copied to the mayor, Greg Nickels, the director of transportation Grace Crunican and Councilman Richard Conlin.

It was also noted that a FCA member was recently involved in a traffic accident along Fauntleroy Way and Kim Petram forwarded this information along to Brian Kemper with a reminder to him that the FCA was waiting to hear from him regarding the issues.

NEWSLETTER
Martha Collard reported that the deadline for articles for the next Neighbors Newsletter would be Monday Sept. 20.  Included thus far is an article on the Fauntleroy Fall Festival, information regarding the drainage project, SW Council information, Cove Park clean-up information and traffic updates.  A discussion was held regarding what sort of information Bruce Butterfield should have in his President’s Corner article.  This led to a discussion regarding potential surveys the FCA could be doing with the membership to address specific areas of interest. Lynn Olsen came up with many issues that could be addressed further depending on what the community found of most interest including issues related to the ferry, the monorail, viaduct, traffic issues, bus services. Chuck Sawyer outlined two survey questions regarding the ferry and the monorail as a starting point for information gathering.  A discussion of what to do with the information solicited was held including using it to facilitate a general meeting or expanding the questioning.

FAUNTLEROY MONORAIL EXTENSION
Chuck Sawyer reported on the monorail web site which reports that one option being considered for phase ll is the Pink Line which would extend the monorail from Morgan Street Junction to the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock.  Phase ll decisions are reported to be made by the end of this year.

FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL
Marty Westerman reported on the on going planning for the FFF.  He reports that almost all of the participants, performers and programs have been identified.  Many events are to be held in the outdoor play area behind the Fauntleroy School.  It was requested that better signage point people to this area.  Marty reports that, with contributions, the funding is on target.  A request was made for the FCA to donate $180 for balloons which was declined by the board.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Vicki Schmitz-Block reported that the FCA account holds $8160 with the FFF portion at $2700.  The Cove Park account is at $2200.

NEW BUSINESS
Marty Westerman reported concerns he has on land use issues including splitting lots for multi-housing projects.  He refers to the DPD link on the city's web site to educate the community.
