FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION BOARD MEETING
FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2002 - 7 P.M.
BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Dawson, Bruce Butterfield, Lynn Sealey,
Phil Sweetland, Kim Suyama, Vlad Oustimovich, Kirk Hopkins, Chuck Sawyer
and Vicki Schmitz.
FCA MEMBERS PRESENT: Martha Callard and Linda Cox.
GUEST PRESENT: Stan Lock (West Seattle Neighborhood Service Center).
1. MINUTES: There was a correction to the 8/13/02 minutes. Under #3,
Ferry Discussion, Bruce asked that the second paragraph be deleted. This
amendment was seconded and approved by those present.
2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Vicki reported a balance of $7,357.06. That
amount includes the $823.15 reimbursement from the grant we received from
the City for Nature Night. All bills are paid.
3. FERRY DISCUSSION: Gary attended the Ferry Advisory Executive
Committee meeting last Thursday. There was a full agenda and Mike Thorne,
the director, presented major goals for the ferry system. Because just 80%
of the needs for the system will be funded from fares to the year 2009, he
is looking at ideas to get more funding. Some of these include adding
retail space at Colman Dock and accepting advertising. Mr. Thorne also has
asked his managers to reduce overall costs by 5% over 5 years. For some
reason, ridership has been lower the last two years. Nevertheless, he
projects being in the black by 2008. Gary said that some boat maintenance
is under operations, and some under capital expenses.
The dock closure will be from September 21st through October 13th. The
work being done under water must be completed by October 15th because of
the beginning of the salmon run up Fauntleroy Creek.
4. PARKS: Phil spotted some surveyors on Director just north the Fish
Ladder Overlook. They were scouting for a place to put the emergency
generator for the dock/ferry. Phil contacted Ware, who will find out the
details and whether or not a DCLU permit has been issued.
5. WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP: Kirk plans to attend the
next meeting on September 17th at Arts West, 4711 California Ave SW. These
meetings are open to everyone.
6. SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: The SWDC meets the first Wednesday of
each month at South Seattle Community College, and these meetings are open
to all community members. Vlad reported from the meeting he attended on
September 4th that there was a Monorail update. Also there was a
presentation on the Chinese Garden. Thirdly, Grace Crunican, who is the
new SDOT director, will come to visit West Seattle on October 10th from 2
to 5 P.M. This prompted some discussion about how we would receive her
here in Fauntleroy. Topics may include Martha's concern about the
up-coming problems for traffic on her street when a new sewer goes in.
Also, to be included would be the continuing ferry line difficulties along
Fauntleroy Way. Chuck voiced a concern about speeding vehicles along
Fauntleroy and that perhaps we could ask Grace for a study. Lynn, Martha,
Gary and Bruce volunteered to be a part of the greeter's group. Gary will
put together an agenda for Fauntleroy issues and will communicate those
items to Stan Lock, who will work out the time frame for Grace's visit
here.
7. LOUD AIRPLANES: Linda announced that there will be a public hearing
next Monday, September 16th at 9:30 A.M in Room 1001 of the County
Courthouse, at 516 Third Avenue, Seattle. Those people who would like to
speak for 3 minutes on this subject may do so. Call 206-296-1000 for
questions regarding the format of the hearing or visit the website:
www.metrokc.gov/mkcc/clerk/index.htm. West Seattle citizens should
continue to call 206-205-5242, the number at the King County International
Airport (at Boeing Field) when bothered by aircraft noise day or night.
Linda reported that several airlines including United, Horizon, and
Southwest Air have flown too low over West Seattle, sometimes less than
600 feet and occasionally after 10 P.M.
8. NEWSLETTER: Martha Callard has volunteered to take over the
Fauntleroy Community Association's newsletter. She will communicate with
Judy about the details.
9. MEMBERSHIP: Phil told the group that he has perfected the
spreadsheet with details for following membership renewals. He will meet
with Vicki and Lynn on Thursday morning at 9 A.M., September 19th to hone
the details.
10. 4520 SW BRACE POINT DRIVE: There was nothing new to report on this
City property.
11. WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: There is much excitement in the community
about the newly renovated WSHS. There will be an open house on Thursday,
September 12th from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Those who miss that will have an
opportunity to participate in a PTA Auction scheduled soon. Watch the West
Seattle Herald or call Dan Jensen, president of the WSHS PTA, at
206-391-5555. Items still are needed for the auction donations.
12. FAUNTLEROY STENCH: Bruce will call Jill Hansen about continuing her
surveillance of this on-going, but periodic, problem. Call The Stench
Hotline (Environmental Health Office) at 206-296-4632 to report awareness
of Fauntleroy area stench.
13. AUDUBON SOCIETY: The Seattle Audubon Society, Kim announced, will
have a free bird watch on Saturday, September 21st at 9 A.M. Meet at
Lincoln Park's Shelter #1.
14. SALMON WATCH TRAINING: Phil said that on October 10th at 6:30 P.M.
at the Fauntleroy Church, there will be training for those interested in
volunteer activities connected with the returning salmon in Fauntleroy
Creek. Seattle Public Utilities is sponsoring the training.
15. MARINE VIEW DRIVE DRAINAGE: Ted Hilton was not present to expand on
the MVD drainage problems. Phil said it would help Fauntleroy Creek to
have more fresh water, and Ted wants to make sure there is no adverse
impact on the creek should drainage be improved up on higher ground.
16. WEST SEATTLE JAZZ FESTIVAL: This coming weekend (September
13th-15th) there is a Jazz Festival here in West Seattle sponsored by
Huling Brothers, ArtsWest and the Chamber of Commerce.
www.jazzwestseattle.org is the web site where more information can be
found on location and time.
17. NEXT MEETING: The next FCA Board meeting is Tuesday, October 8th at
7 P.M.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Lynn B. Sealey F.C.A. Secretary LBSea@attbi.com
