Board Meeting Minutes

FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING - FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2003 - 7 P.M.

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bruce Butterfield, Martha Callard, Gary Dawson, Kirk Hopkins, Vlad Oustimovitch, Chuck Sawyer, Phil Sweetland and Martin Westerman.

GUESTS: Dwight Gaut and Stan Lock.

1. MINUTES: With the following two corrections, the minutes from August's meeting were approved and can be posted on the website: The name of one guest was Lisa Perry, not Petty, and the Ferry Advisory Committee hosted in Fauntleroy will be October 12th, not Oct. 2nd.

2. TREASURER'S REPORT: The amount of $7,540.00 is in the main account and $2,298.40 is in the Cove Park account.

3. MEMBERSHIP: Phil devised a new membership form that includes a line for "Donation for Fall Festival." He also added a statement about contributions not being tax deductible. He stated that no flyers are being mailed before the Fall Festival, but there will be flyers available at businesses in the community and there will be an E-mail notification.

4. NEWSLETTER: Martha announced that the next newsletter would be published after the October 19th Fall Festival. Since Martha will be out of town most of October, she hopes someone with a digital camera will take photos at the Fall Festival for inclusion in the next newsletter. Martha informed the group about the "reverse logging" operation that went on at Fauntleroy Park as part of the Fauntleroy Creek preservation efforts. New logs are being brought in to re-create habitat at the Fish Ladder and Creek.

Martha would like to have a regular column about "People in Our Community Who Make a Difference." Another idea she has is to utilize the big white space around the address label on the Newsletter with some sort of announcement or promotion. Additionally, Bruce suggested a "Changing Face of Fauntleroy" article and he would like ideas. An informative article about the RPZ permits would be helpful. Bruce had a complaint from a neighbor about cars parking overnight in the "No Parking from 2-5 am" zones. Dot will look into this.

5. FCA WEBSITE: Kirk reported that Chris had made some website changes.

6. ANTI-CRIME COMMITTEE: Kirk said that after August "off," anti-crime meetings will resume this month. Bruce heard Captain Prior and Lt. John Hayes talk; he would like to have them come speak at a General Meeting. Martha suggested we should have a "Log of Ideas for Speakers and Agendas" along with an on-going list of ideas for the website.

7. SWDC: Vlad attends Southwest Precinct meetings and reported that Captain Prior wanted feedback from the community. Robert Belsahy is in charge of our area and South Park. The "Bacon Bowl" tournament with the Seattle Police vs. Tacoma Police will take place on October 11th. For more information, the Precinct telephone number is: 203-233-5067.

On behalf of the SWDC, Vlad sent a letter to the City Council regarding the Sex Offender Housing issue. Another issue discussed at the meeting was the Alaska Way Viaduct. Vlad has been working with the Ballard District Council on this matter. Next Friday, Vlad will meet with Tim Ceis, Deputy Mayor, to try to get everyone's cooperation on all issues regarding the Viaduct as to whether to preserve it or enhance it. He mentioned that Senator Patty Murray is working on a draft to obtain funding and feels at best we will get 50% of total funding so we need to have all political groups in alignment.

Vlad has been attending numerous meetings about Monorail station placements.

Neighborhood Matching Grants are on hold right now, so the SWDC wrote a letter to Mayor Greg Nickels saying how important these funds are to our communities. Vlad added that the SWDC is very active and meetings are "jam packed" every month.

8. FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL: Martin Westerman reported that a letter was sent out to businesses asking for Fall Festival donations. He will meet with the Steel Company, as it appears they have never been solicited before. The organization of the Fall Festival is going according to schedule, but the planners are looking for a lot more private funding. Martha suggested we set up a "donation jar" and have envelopes available for people's checks. The FCA should promote itself at the Festival, and Martha said that balloons could be printed with the FCA and Fall Festival logos and that our brochures should be available. Martin will contact Sheila Weaver about balloons. Activities such as booths for ring toss, bird house building, face painting and pumpkin painting are already in place. Martin is working on having a booth and representative present for "Bio Diesel," which is an air pollution prevention fuel that smells like French fries cooking.

9. E-MAIL OUTREACH COORDINATOR: Bruce asked the group how much our E-mail should be used to send out messages to those on the E-mail list. How much is too much? When Martha suggested that E-mail should not go out with Lynn Sealey's name, Kirk said he would talk with Lynn and Chris about doing it under a new heading such as: "FCA Info." There also should be an "unsubscribe" message on our communications.

10. STENCH: No report, but it was agreed that this has been indeed a bad year for it.

11. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Until October 15th, the Chamber is taking suggestions of names for "People Who Make a Difference" in West Seattle.

12. WELCOME BAGS: The F.C.A. needs to be more pro-active in getting welcome bags distributed to new community members. Martha added that the Ashbys no longer have time to be in charge of the bags and that perhaps a storage facility is now necessary to store the bags and all kinds of other supplies.

13. TELEPHONE POLES: Gary brought it to everyone's attention that the telephone pole project has not been completed and that we need to send a letter to City Light to get them back to Fauntleroy. Vlad mentioned that the crews are all working at High Point right now.

The next F.C.A. Board meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th at 7 pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm Respectfully submitted, Dot Rohan and Lynn Sealey
