Board Meeting Minutes

FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING
FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2003 - 7 P.M.

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bruce Butterfield, Martha Callard, Gary Dawson, Chuck Sawyer, Lynn Sealey, Phil Sweetland and Martin Westerman.

GUESTS: Sandra Melo, Lisa Perry, and Maria Groen.

CONSULTANT: Lynn Olson.

1. MINUTES: The minutes from July's meeting were approved and can now be posted on the website.

2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Deferred until September's meeting due to Vicki's absence.

3. MEMBERSHIP: Phil reported that as of June 1st, there are 229 paid F.C.A. memberships; of those, 35 are new. Thirty-three courtesy newsletters (the current summer issue) were mailed. A total of 400 newsletters were printed. Copies were taken to the Bakery and to the Fauntleroy Church. Additionally, Martha will take some (about 30) to the West Beach Condominiums.

4. NEWSLETTER: Martha said that the next newsletter would be published after the October 19th Fall Festival. Topics will include real estate in Fauntleroy, a profile on people who have made a difference, and stories about old houses in our neighborhood. Sudden Printing, which does the newsletter printing, should also do the folding (which was not done with the current newsletter). Barbara Burgess helped fold and label the last newsletter and will help with the next one.

5. FERRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Gary said that the next date for the Executive Council meeting is September 25th. October 12th will probably be the date that Fauntleroy hosts the meeting. Pat Patterson, the Director of Communications for the ferry, is renewing the food vendors and wants to have high quality service. Marriot currently has the contract. However, the biggest issue now is to try to get more funding from the legislature next year.

6. SWDC: There was no meeting of the Southwest District Council in August.

7. FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL: There was considerable discussion about the Fall Festival, which will be Sunday, October 19th. It will be bigger than last year, and thus cost more ($10,000 vs. $5,000 last year). Last year, Maria Groen reported, the City of Seattle grant was the main source of funding, but this year, there are no such sources. It is desired that the festival be free for the community. Thus, Maria is organizing the solicitation of sponsors and in- kind donors, all who will receive recognition on flyers and on posters. The YWCA, Fauntleroy Church and Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes all will participate.

The F.C.A. needs to provide one active member who will attend 5 meetings beginning September 4th (one per week) plus provide 50 volunteer hours, which could be 10 people working 5 hours each the day of the event. Martin and Chuck volunteered for this (Chuck to be back-up). Phil made a motion which carried that the F.C.A. be the fiscal agent for the Festival moneys. There will thus be extra work for our treasurer, Vicki Schmitz. The hours she spends, however, can count as part of the 50 hours for the F.C.A.

Maria will go to the September S.W.D.C. meeting to announce the Fall Festival. The Festival should effectively function as an event to improve Fauntleroy Community Association's outreach to procure new members, especially young families. Further discussion included putting information on the website and in the Department of Neighborhoods monthly flyer.

8. TRAFFIC: Phil Sweetland, in the recent issue of the FCA "Neighbors" newsletter, outlined the progress of solutions for our traffic problems. Martin confirmed that speed bumps on 47th would be installed as well as a curb bulb at Brace Point Drive. Kim Petram will work on getting a cross-walk across Fauntleroy Way to the Lincoln Park wading pool. Phil added that the document sent to the city officials did a lot of good.

9. COVE PARK COMMITTEE: Ann Dawson has had two individuals respond to help maintain Cove Park. She needs a few more.

10. STENCH: Lynn S. contacted Jill Hansen about getting the Health Department number. Several people present commented on increasing stench episodes.

The next F.C.A. Board meeting will be on Tuesday, September 9th.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm Respectfully submitted, Lynn B. Sealey F.C.A. Secretary
