Meeting Minutes
FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bruce Butterfield, Gary Dawson, Vlad Oustimovitch, Chuck Sawyer, Lynn Sealey, Vicki Schmitz, Phil Sweetland and Martin Westerman. F.C.A. MEMBERS PRESENT: Ann Dawson and Judy Pickens. 1. MINUTES: The minutes from June's meeting were approved. 2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Vicki reported a balance of $7,590.35. She suggested printing in the newsletters the names of those who renew their memberships. That way, readers of the newsletter see the names and may consider joining or renewing if they have not done so already. 3. MEMBERSHIP: Bruce will send Phil the addresses of new neighbors by checking with a title company. 4. FERRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Gary announced that all public meetings scheduled for this summer have been postponed. That includes the August 12th meeting that was to be hosted in Fauntleroy. The next date for the Executive Council meeting is September 25th. Despite the fact that the Legislature will fund the passenger-only ferries for the near future, there is still a possibility that our Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth run will have some changes with the elimination of a couple of scheduled boats. 5. MOREY SKARET: Judy Pickens has nearly finished the book she is writing on Morey, who will be 90 years old on August 2nd. Judy approached David Haggerty of Tuxedos 'n Tennis Shoes about having a book signing with a no-host wine bar. There will be some food items too, and the cost will be covered by the books that are sold. The book signing will be held in the garden in back of the Fauntleroy School. The date will be Wednesday, August 6th. "Seattle Night Out" is on the 5th. Those who come will be expected to buy a book, which will probably cost about $15.00 (Morey is paying for the publishing of the book). Judy has looked into publicity: West Seattle Herald, E-mail, FCA Newsletter, and posters, which could be placed at the Bakery and at Square I Books at the Junction. Phil made the motion for FCA to sponsor Morey's book signing, which was seconded and carried by the members present. 6. STENCH: Several people present have noticed the "stench" in the past few weeks. Judy stressed how important it is for everyone to keep a diary of the date/time when odors are noticed. She added that the Public Health officials need to come to Fauntleroy when the odors are prevalent, and that our documentation will help. Lynn will call Jill to ask if she can find a telephone number that Fauntleroy residents can call when the problem surfaces. 7. COVE PARK COMMITTEE: Ann Dawson has volunteered to head a committee for the purpose of maintaining Cove Park. In July, 1999, the FCA Board approved the plan to accept responsibility for long term maintenance of the Fish Ladder and Cove Park. A maintenance coordinator was to have been appointed to oversee appropriate maintenance and recruit volunteers and assign tasks and hire contract help if necessary. Ann's idea is to have three work parties per year: April, June, and in the fall. The art work needs attention and protection, particularly the canoe, which needs a sealer, and sand should be swept periodically off the ground art. Ann agreed to chair the committee through the rest of this year and into 2004, until someone takes over. Mardi told Ann that she will continue to organize the "Spring Clean," in conjunction with the city wide effort. Vicki made a motion to "sponsor a Cove Park Committee." This was seconded and carried by the membership present. Because Mardi had a list of those who attended (Department of Neighborhoods requirement), it was decided that perhaps volunteers could be recruited off that list. The maintenance must be automatic. 8. SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Vlad noted several items. A. There is more discussion about having City Council officials from the main geographic areas. B. He said that as far as the ferry traffic is concerned, it is more of a West Seattle issue (i.e. have some ferry boats go downtown so to help alleviate congestion on Fauntleroy and the West Seattle Bridge) than a city-wide issue. C. Monorail: The committee still meets every 2 weeks, but Vlad does not head it any more, as he is now on the Monorail Review Committee for the city. The latter committee meets every 2 weeks for 3 hours. D. U.S. Senator Patty Murray, who is a senior member of the Transportation Committee, recently came to a meeting at the Seattle Design Center to discuss the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Federal funds will be available for 50% of whatever is done. 9. FALL FESTIVAL: Martin will have a report in August. 10. NEWSLETTER: The next newsletter will be 6+ pages long and Martha told Bruce it would go to the printer on the 18th. Phil and Bruce and Judy have additions for the newsletter. A mailing coordinator is needed. 11. TRAFFIC: Phil, who met today with three officials including Trevor Partap, feels that the traffic group is closer to solutions. There are still some issues with ferry line-up signage, cross-walk placement, sidewalk possibilities on 45th and 47th SW and excessive speed on those streets. Phil suggested that there be a fall FCA meeting to discuss the traffic and that it might be a good idea to tie it in with the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Phil said the document that was sent to city officials was received well and all points will be addressed. Phil plans to e-mail a synopsis to those on the traffic committee. 12. LYNN OLSON: Lynn has been a very helpful and creative assistant for the FCA Board for the past three years. It was decided to get her a business card with the title "Director of Administrative Services" or "Executive Coordinator," and it was a unanimous decision to give her a raise of $3/hour. 13. BEACH WALK: Sheila and Gordon and Kim did a wonderful job coordinating the successful Beach Walk last month. Thank you cards made by Lynn were passed around for everyone to sign. The next F.C.A. Board meeting will be on Tuesday, August 12th. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm Respectfully submitted, Lynn B. Sealey, F.C.A. Secretary www.fauntleroy.net |
