Board Meeting Minutes

FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING
FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 2003

Board Members Attending: Gary Dawson, Bruce Butterfield, Martin Westerman, Kirk Hopkins

Guests Attending: Stan Locke, Gordon Wiehler, Sheila Weaver, Kim Petram, Kathleen Dellplain, Anne Dalrymple

Staff Person Attending: Lynn Olson

Meeting opened at 7:00pm and minutes were approved. There was no treasurer's report and no membership report.

Stan Locke briefed the group on the June 4th Southwest District Council Meeting. Key topics included Heidi Wills' presentation about the ability of Seattle City Light keeping rates down and the forthcoming grant funding for the replacement of the totem pole at the Admiral Way curve and overlook park. Next SWDC meeting will be held on July 2, 2003.

Kirk was unable to attend the anticrime council meeting due to scheduling conflicts and the council is taking the summer off. Kathleen Dellplain reported that in her neighborhood (Maplewood Place) someone recently stole a neighbor's stand-alone basketball hoop one evening without anyone noticing.

Gary Dawson updated the group on the ferry system's budget woes and reminded the group that Fauntleroy will be hosting the August 12, 2003 Ferry Advisory Committee meeting at a location yet to be determined.

Martin was unable to attend the recent planning meeting for the Fauntleroy Fall Festival, but he reported that two letters were drafted and are being edited for distribution to local businesses. One is soliciting support (promotion and volunteerism) and the other is asking for sponsorships for the various activities at the festival. It was suggested by the planning group that the Fauntleroy Community Association take the lead role in these solicitations, so once the planning group completes the edits, the FCA will receive the drafts for final edits, printing, and signatures. The FCA needs to designate alternates for Martin so that the FCA stays informed throughout the festival's planning.

Anne Dalrymple made a presentation to the group about the People for Puget Sound's Shoreline Stewardship Program. Throughout the Puget Sound, people who live on the beach and neighbors upstream volunteer to learn more about geology, ecology, marine life and the impacts of living near the shoreline. Lead volunteers are called Pod Leaders, and there are many education modules for people interested in getting involved. It was surprising to find that there are no Pod Leaders in West Seattle. It was suggested that Anne be interviewed for an article in the FCA newsletter and that she contact Judy Pickens in case the Watershed Council could benefit from information from the People for Puget Sound.

The June 14th Beach Walk update included coordination of logistics and materials for setting up at Lincoln Park's Shelter #3. Approval had been given for the design and purchase of a banner with the FCA logo and web site address to post at the Beach Walk and future events. Sudden Printing still did not have a mock-up proof to review and approve as of Tuesday night, June 10, 2003.

Martin Westerman raised a couple of "new business" items. Those included the rapidly installed new NO PARKING signs along 47th. The neighborhood requested the change, but the signs, along with enforcement, arrived without notice, so many neighbors were ticketed.

Martin also suggested that the FCA become more vocal about some environmental issues, such as illumination control (light pollution by streetlights) and spreading the word about low-energy use alternatives for appliance replacement. It was suggested that he talk with Martha Callard about drafting articles or newsletter inserts to educate the membership on things we can all do to make a difference and reduce the impacts we have on the environment.

The meeting adjourned at 9:05pm.

Respectfully submitted, Lynn Olson
