Board Meeting Minutes

FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING
FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003 - 7 P.M.

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bruce Butterfield, Martha Callard, Chuck Sawyer, Lynn Sealey, Phil Sweetland and Martin Westerman.

F.C.A. MEMBERS PRESENT: Kim Petram, Sheila Weaver and Gordon Wiehler.

F.C.A. STAFF MEMBER PRESENT: Lynn Olson.

1. MINUTES: The minutes from March's meeting were approved with one correction (#6) noted by Phil Sweetland. The minutes had been sent to the Board only and can now be posted on the website once the correction is made.

2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Lynn S. reported for Vicki a balance of $8,124.36 as of May 6th. The Cove Park account stands at $2,298.40. Martin had some questions about our tax status (we are a 501C-4), and he will inquire about a 501C-3.

3. PATHFINDER SCHOOL BENEFIT: Martin reported that the event held on April 28th was a huge success with $3,500 raised plus another $200 from the Alaska Junction restaurants. He added that including the restaurants was a good way to do an evening benefit, as it is fun to make a night of it with dinner beforehand.

4. MEMBERSHIP: Phil said that currently there are 244 dues paying members. Of those, 150 are up to date with their dues payments, 27 are behind less than 6 months, 16 are behind 6 to 12 months, and 51 are over a year in arrears. It was suggested that perhaps a gentle reminder could be e-mailed to those not up to date.

5. NEWSLETTERS: Martha expects to do four newsletters per year. There was some discussion among the group about whether the newsletter could be sent electronically. For those members who do not use computers, hard-copies would have to be printed. Bulk mail limits would enter into this decision. Bruce thought the newsletter should be printed in Adobe format.

6. FERRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Gary Dawson is at the Southworth F.A.C. meeting tonight. Bruce said that the South Sound meeting on May 13th lasted for three hours. One item that came up from Director Mike Thorne was that there is currently capacity downtown to run some of the Southworth boats there instead of into Fauntleroy. The city is looking at traffic congestion on the West Seattle Bridge and downtown near the ferry terminal. Also, Mr. Thorne talks about closing the Fauntleroy dock in the future.

7. ANNUAL MEETING REVISITED: Those present said that the meeting with the five food vendors (The Original Bakery, On-Safari Foods/The Food Shop, Endolyne Joe's, Guadalahjara, and Tuxedos 'N Tennis Shoes) was a great success. David Haggerty of Tuxedos "N Tennis Shoes is credited with coordinating the event. Unfortunately, there was a conflicting meeting across the street, and many people left for it before our formal meeting began. Bruce kept the meeting moving along very well and on schedule (it was just 10 minutes over). In planning for next year, it was decided that in January, we must talk about a date for 2004's meeting, determine conflicts in February, invite guests in March, put out a newsletter in April with an article about the meeting and date, and promote the meeting with at least one e-mail reminder in May. Another suggestion was to place real estate tent signs around the neighborhood to advertise the meeting. Also, we need to promote Food Bank donations to a better extent.

Bruce sent thank you notes to speakers Peter Steinbrueck and Yvonne Sanchez. Lynn S. will deliver signed honorary F.C.A. membership certificates to each restaurant participant along with a thank you letter written by Bruce and Lynn O. Each letter was signed by all the Board members present.

8. BEACH WALK: Kim Petram, Sheila Weaver and Gordon Wiehler are working together to coordinate this event, scheduled for Saturday, June 14th. Lincoln Park Shelter #3 has already been reserved by Chuck Sawyer from 10 am until 6 pm. The low tide is a -3.7 at 11:28 am. Chuck added that two naturalist volunteers from the Department of Natural Resources will be present to answer questions. Publicity was discussed. Those present decided it should be a bring your own picnic instead of a potluck.

9. TRAFFIC AND STREET LAMPS: Martin will meet with the engineering Department on May 22nd at 3 pm at the corner of Roxbury and 47th. Martin would like to see street lights shaded with lamps, and he will look into how this could be done.

10. FALL FESTIVAL: Deb Kerns told Bruce that volunteers are needed from the Fauntleroy Community Association to attend planning meetings. There will be more discussion at the next meeting.

11. CITY LIGHT SUBSTATION: Discussion deferred until the next meeting

12. NEXT MEETING: The next F.C.A. Board meeting will be on Tuesday, June 10th.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm Respectfully submitted, Lynn B. Sealey, F.C.A. Secretary
