FAUNTLEROY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING
FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, MAY 11, 2004 - 7 P.M.
Meeting called to order at 7:10p.m., Fauntleroy Hall meeting room, by
FCA President Bruce Butterfield. Attendees included Lynn Olson, Vlad
Ostimovich, Gary Dawson, Vicki Smith, city guest Stan Locke, Kim Petram,
Martha Callard, Phil Sweetland, and Temporary Secretary Martin Westerman.
April minutes were approved as read.
Fauntleroy Crosswalks Kim Petram reported that the neighborhood's
request to the City for crosswalks at the north end of Lincoln Park has
resulted in Megan Hoyt (@S-DOT) and other city personnel replying with
suggestions to create (1) a landscaped median that would eliminate parking
on the west side of the street, (2) a permanent speed indicator sign on a
post, for which they expect the neighborhood to pay ($8000-$12000), or a
(3) traffic light at Fauntleroy Dock, which does not address any issue at
the trouble spot ˝ mile to the north. Suggestions from FCA: (1) place a
traffic light a half block south of the tennis courts, (2) collect a
critical mass of community people to meet with Megan Hoyt, Katie Gray, Don
Allen, Joe Couples, Trevor Pardap group at S-DOT, and demand that they
address this safety issue (3) draft a letter in S-DOT bureaucrat-ese -
"the basic problem is not traffic pulsing, but traffic volume"
-- to an authority higher, such as the City Council and Mayor Nickels.
Nickels will visit W. Seattle; suggestion that we bring him and Councilman
Conlin, who chairs Transportation, to observe the situation and get their
support. Martha suggested putting out the word in the neighborhood in a
way that compiles a list of interested neighborhood parties. Gary
suggested that Bruce Butterfield bring the matter to Nickels' attention at
his Sealth High School visit May 15. Bruce agreed to attend the meeting.
Phil suggested gathering people on a particular date in the hall at the
Church, to discuss the matter, with related political and administrative
city government people.
Secretary search Kirk Hopkins has agreed to handle the e-mail list
portion of former secretary Lynn's job. Kim Petram volunteered to serve as
Secretary; the Board approved Kim and Martin as co-Secretaries.

Spring meeting follow-up Round of applause for all our efforts;
"standing room only". Estimate of attendance: 150, at which food
was provided by Tuxedos 'n' Tennis Shoes, Endolyne Joe's, The Original
Bakery, On Safari Foods and Cat's Eye Café. Food vendors loved it - they
ran out of provisions. Several members renewed; new members tallied 16.
Consider for next year: child care activities, or open the playground
behind the building, perhaps get a couple of teenagers to watch them or
tap from the staff of the Children's Center, aka "supervised
play." Kim agreed investigate using the center and the Y, too. Did
the prizes work? People had fun and felt sad they didn't win anything, so
prizes are good to incorporate. Renee assembled most of the prizes.
Arrangement of food purveyors: grouping them together was good and bad:
chow line effect on the one hand, but on the other, each got prominence.
How to get word out: neighborhood signs, Endolyne Joe's e-mail, plus note
on the Joe's indoor tote board; advertising and word of mouth. Kim P. said
we can get the metal frame "H" bracket signposts, for a low
per-unit price if bought in bulk, and into which we can insert two-sided
signs for any upcoming FCA event. Each FCA member could keep one at his or
her home to alleviate storage problems.
Ferry Advisory Committee Exec. Council meeting scheduled for June 3 at
Pier 52 midday, & South Sound Ferry Advisory Committee hosted by FCA,
scheduled for June 15. The other issue up is re-routing the Vashon &
Southworth ferries directly to downtown Seattle in some combination,
including a minimum Vashon-Fauntleroy run, and closing the Fauntleroy
Dock, which is operating at capacity now (3 boats an hour), and will
require major work within the next five years. Without the ability to
expand the dock, WSF would rather shut it down. Fauntleroy Ferry Dock
closure has been put on the 34th District Democrats' meeting agenda for
May 12. Some discussion about the mis-perception that FCA backs closure of
the dock. FCA opposes dock expansion, which would lead to increased
traffic. Ferry money will go first to repairing current docks, then to
replacing fleet vessels, then to system expansion. Gary warns that,
despite this lead time, FCA should not become complacent. Gary & Bruce
expressed interest in attending.
New business West Seattle Helpline Gala Thursdsay, May 20. Good food,
good company, and only $50. Thank you note from Dow Constantine. First
Faunt. Fall Fest. meeting is May 18. Port of Seattle & Nucor have
already pledged $850; Vlad mentioned a $250 Spark grant available from
City of Seattle. Contact Stan Locke. Newsletter: next copy deadline June
1, publishing deadline June 30. Discussion of story ideas, including help
for the Cat's Eye owner's husband, whose reserve unit was called up for
duty in Iraq and is seeking laptop computers to help the 3000 members of
his unit e-mail home; use of FCA photo panels; emergency generator news;
Cove Park pump station project; and other. One-way re-configure for
Barton-Brace Pt.-45th -- check on signatures Phil Polizatto gathered
(932-7050) Vlad - Southwest Comm. Council inaugurating the Avalon Comm.
Assoc. and Friends of the (Alaska) Junction into membership. David Dell
will visit June meeting; Peter Steinbreuck July. Julian Prossor is
following the DADU (mother-in-law dwelling proposal), and SWCC conducted
long meeting with Neil Powers, aide to Peter Steinbreuck, on subject. Re:
SW Precinct Advisory Panel - interesting stats: Jan-Feb total number of
offenses down 20%, a positive sign that the new precinct is having a
positive impact on the community. Bob Fernandez announced that Lincoln
Park Annex Pea Patch will grow crops this year. WSDOT and Viaduct &
Seawall Replacement Authority produced an excellent summary of the the
replacement and construction proposals, which he passed around for member
viewing. Stan Locke - Neighborhood Service Center will move out of its
current location June 30, into one of two Junction-area locations that are
currently under negotiation by July 1. Lynn Olson - suggested gift of
appreciation for Chris Nack for all the watershed council and graphic arts
work she has done on FCA's behalf. Contribution for $75 for West Seattle
Nursery, moved and seconded; approved. A second gift for Lynn Sealey, for
$100, moved and approved.
Treasurer's Report - Cove Park: $2298.40; FCA: $9206.14; FFF is
somewhere inside the FCA amount. Phil talked about getting financial
software to help clarify accounting.
