FAUNTLEROY SCHOOL
TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2003 - 7 P.M.

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Dawson, Bruce Butterfield, Lynn Sealey, Phil Sweetland, Vlad Oustimovitch, Chuck Sawyer, Kim Suyama, Martha Callard and Vicki Schmitz.

F.C.A. STAFF MEMBER PRESENT: Lynn Olson.

F.C.A MEMBERS PRESENT: Dow Constantine.

GUESTS PRESENT: Jeremy Hardy, Amanda Lee, Bob Venezia and Betty Bennett.

1. MINUTES: The minutes from the November meeting were approved.

2. TREASURER'S REPORT: Vicki reported a balance of $7,496.60 as of today with $2,298.40 in the Cove Park Fund account. The latter amount came from grants and needs to be spent.

3. SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Vlad said that City Council Member Peter Steinbrueck was present at last Wednesday's monthly SWDC meeting. As president of the SWDC, Vlad would like to form a SWDC committee made up of neighborhood organizations (MOCA, Admiral, Fauntleroy) for the purpose of looking at all transportation issues (monorail, viaduct, ferries) in a comprehensive fashion. On Tuesday, January 21st, the Elevated Transportation Company will have a planning session at West Seattle High School from 4 to 8 P.M. See the website www.elevated.org for more updates. Vlad added that ETC had hired a community relations firm to assist with community outreach.

4. NEWLETTER: Martha was congratulated for producing her first Fauntleroy "Neighbors" newsletter, which appeared within the last couple of days in mailboxes. In turn, Martha thanked Judy Pickens for all her assistance. Pat Schille will coordinate future mailings of the newsletters.

5. RESTAURANT COMING TO FAUNTLEROY: Guest Jeremy Hardy delighted the group with news that he and his business partner have bought the Saffron Cow. Jeremy said he had been looking in West Seattle for 10 years, and when he saw the Saffron Cow location, he knew it was perfect. In 1988, Jeremy and his partner started in the restaurant business with $5,000. Since their first restaurant in Wallingford, they have owned 4 establishments. Their new Fauntleroy restaurant (name is secret for now) will open in mid-May with a cocktail party and door prizes. It will be similar to their Queen Anne Five Spot restaurant in that it will serve breakfast (Espresso - yes), lunch and dinner. Rotating country specialties will be offered in addition to hamburgers and pork chop and fried chicken dinners. A twenty foot long mahogany table will be installed to support a full service bar.

6. WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP: No update.

7. MONORAIL DISCUSSION: Chuck Sawyer and guest Betty Bennett passed out a draft for a resolution on the monorail planning. There are many aspects to the planning, which include transit stations, parking challenges, zoning and environmental issues. It was agreed that the entire transportation plan needs to be understood and discussed with the caveat that taxes should not have to be raised to complete the project. Vlad will call Tom Weeks to get advice on how the F.C.A. should go forward with getting the resolution endorsed by our community and F.C.A. Board. Lynn Olson volunteered to type it with the FCA letterhead and logo.

8. FERRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Gary gave some background on the F.A.C. for the benefit of the guests present. The monthly meeting for the 21 advisory location participants has been changed to the 4th Thursday of each month. With the massive changes in ferry service resulting from the passage of Referendum 51, there are many challenges for the future that will impact ferry service and maintenance. Consult the following website for continuous updates: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/ Gary pointed out that some of our vessels are the same age as the Spirit of St. Louis (1927).

9. TRAFFIC ISSUES: Phil presented an overview of the traffic meeting planned for January 30. All those who have traffic concerns or issues on their streets should attend this meeting. Follow up with city departments will be very important. In the meantime, residents can send their concerns to  or telephone Phil Sweetland at 206-938-4203. The meeting will be held at 7 P.M. at the Fauntleroy Church Fellowship Hall.

10. NATURE NIGHT: There was discussion on presenting another nature series in March. Bruce will call Shirley Aird, Sherry Richardson, and Debbie Kerns to see if any of them might be interested. Lynn Olson said the grant moneys came through the "Y."

11. NEIGHBORHOOD APPRECIATION DAY: Lynn Olson will have cards to write on for your special neighbors. Contact her at Lynn.Olson@juno.com or 206-935-9738 if you want some. The city-wide date is Saturday, February 8.

12. ANNUAL REPORT: Vicki volunteered to have a meeting at her house on February 4 at 6 P.M. to discuss and put together the F.C.A. Annual Report. Wine will be served.

13. GENERAL MEETING: Discussion will begin at the next Board meeting.

14. NEXT BOARD MEETING: The next FCA Board meeting will be Tuesday, February 11 at 7 P.M.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
