Board Meeting Minutes
Fauntleroy Community Association
Business Meeting
January 9, 2007
President Bruce Butterfield called the monthly meeting, held at the
Fauntleroy School, to order at 7pm. In attendance was Vlad Oustimovitch,
Kathleen Dellplain, Lynn Olson, Gary Dawson, Vicki Schmitz-Block, James
Betzer, Barbara Startz, Rhonda Claytor, Lisa Conley, Ann Dunbar and
secretary/Vice-President Kim Petram.
SW District Report Vlad Oustimovitch reported on the current status of
the SW District Council. Of note, a new chairmanship has been established.
The goal for this year is renewed organization and enhanced production. A
new initiative for the water taxi was discussed which involves moving the
West Seattle dock site to Jack Block park. This is to be further evaluated
but could enhance linkage to downtown and assist with traffic mitigation.
Treasurer Report
Phil Sweetland produced the monthly budget report which was distributed by
email to board members. Budget planning is in process.
Ferry Advisory Committee
Gary Dawson reports that this month’s FAC meeting will be held January 25th.
Gary outlined the work done thus far with the FAC and actions taken thus far
regarding planning for the new Coleman dock. He will continue to approach
community groups to promote and explain the necessity of building four slips
at the new Coleman dock as well as passenger only service issues and other
related ferry concerns to West Seattle.
Membership Renewals
Kim Petram will be checking on the status of renewed memberships based on
the outreach letters mailed this summer. Vicki Schmitz-Block offered to
telephone lapsed members to personally send a message regarding the
importance of membership.
Welcome Bags
Ann Dunbar updated the board of the status of the welcome bag distribution.
New items are being solicited for inclusion to the bags. The next
distribution is due this quarter and will begin once the newsletters are
produced.
Department of Neighbors
Stan Lock sent word of an upcoming combined district council forum –
“Community Building” offered in conjunction with the Seattle City Council.
Neighbors Newsletter
Martha Callard has requested that the deadline for article submission will
be January 23rd. Martha will be unavailable for establishing the mailing
date and mailing party but it was felt that distribution should be complete
by February 12th. A solicitation was made for guest article submissions. Ann
Dunbar suggested highlighting or interviewing a neighbor in the community
for each newsletter, which was agreed upon by the board.
Wind Storm Update T
he motors at Cove Park were flooded and overwhelmed during the December
storm. COS was extensive in the cove. King County responded quickly to the
emergency.
GateWood Playground Update
Lisa Conley and Rhonda Claytor provided a playground improvement project
update. A master design and plan is in place. The school is now on the cusp
of a massive secondary fund-raising project. A letter of intent to the
Department of Neighborhoods is in process.
March Informational Meeting Planning discussions took place regarding the
March 1 informational meeting. It was decided that the focus of the meeting
should probably be related to transportation issues. The mayor will make a
formal appearance for approximately 30 minutes. Once that part of the
program is complete and the mayor has completed a question and answer
session the FCA will need to have a plan in place for the rest of the
meeting. Informational tables shall be present and possibly be part of the
evening presentation if it is related to the topics discussed. This would
include the WSF, SDOT related to the viaduct and Spokane Street, Stan Lock
related to disaster preparations and SNAP. The focus could pinpoint life and
safety issues as related to the transportation decisions effecting West
Seattle-the viaduct, Spokane Street, lack of adequate passenger and boat
ferry traffic routed directly downtown and demographic changes to the West
Seattle community as well as other communities that impact West Seattle
(Kitsap). Trust issues related to decision making could also be factored in
– lack of city interest in FCA/community input related to the new pedestrian
activated light on Faunleroy Way, realistic impacts to businesses. Bruce
Butterfield and Gary Dawson will speak with Stan Lock and hone down the
agenda.
Bruce Butterfield adjourned the meeting at 9:00.
